Learning to Swim

Before I jumped

You made sure I knew you’d catch me

I saw your arms outstretched

So I closed my eyes

I screamed

Held my breath

And jumped

As I hit the water your arms retract

Leaving me in my tidal wave

I gasp for every breath

As tears streamed down my face

You told me not to let them see me cry

I’m proud of you

You yell from the side as you climb out

Without me

You learned to swim today

And ever since that day

I’ve had a little water left inside my lungs

To remind me of your love
